Few other types of jewelry can match the inherent beauty of pearls. Whether freshwater or saltwater, black, white or any color in between, pearls offer something that no precious metals or gemstones can provide. Perhaps that’s why accessorizing with pearls is so popular. Pearls have always been a popular choice among consumers, but interest in pearls has increased steadily over the last two decades.

Unlike other options, pearls have the capacity to be understated, depending on their size and color. Though the range of colors pearls can be found in is ever widening thanks to new cultivating techniques, pearls generally fall into one of three color schemes. White pearls are most common, followed by colored pearls with hues that range from pink to almost orange. Black pearls round out the list and are often the priciest of pearls.

Tahitian black pearls make exceptional accessories, especially for business and evening wear. Elegant and dressy by nature, these pearls can often be found in cufflinks, earrings and pendant necklaces. White pearls are equally well suited for finer attire, but also go well with casual wear. Colored pearls look best when matched to clothing of a similar or analogous color.

Single strand pearl necklaces usually look better when the pearls that make up the necklace are of the same dimensions, though necklaces with large pearls at the center and descending sizes in each direction can be beautiful with the right fashions. For bracelets, triple strands are becoming more popular, though the single strand bracelets are the top choice for elegant eveningwear.

Pearl earrings can be single pearls studs, clusters, halves or hanging. Single pearl earrings are the most popular, especially white Akoya studs. Unlike round earrings made of gold or other precious metals, the dimensionality of pearls works well with all facial types, whether round, long or anywhere in between.

The important thing to remember when purchasing pearls is that, like diamonds, it’s better to get the best pearl you can afford, even if that means sacrificing size. Quality pearls from a reputable jeweler, preferably one specializing in pearls only, will be something you can enjoy for a lifetime.

For your hair, you should straighten it, or have it down wavy with side bangs (if it looks good on you) or the poof –take the front of your bangs (or hair where your bangs would be) comb it out, and pin/clip back. Layer the pearl necklace (not sure how to explain it, basically twist it on put it on so it looks like there’s two?).Flats, or I’d recommend black sling-backs would be great.A silver wristlet (clutch-bag) would work well, too.

You do not state your age which makes it harder to advise. One thing about pearls is that it is hard to add any other kind of jewelry to it. I would look for a simple pearl bracelet, be sure pearls match in color, there are white and cream pearls. Wear bracelet on left hand, as this makes it easier to eat. Would add a small pearl/cz/diamond ring on right hand, delicate as pearls are very delicate looking and very feminine. Can possibly add some cz’s(rhinestones, fake diamonds-whatever you want to call them) to bracelet, but pearls
should be dominant. I would wear my hair up so as to highlight the necklace. Button/short pearl earrings would be best, because real long ones would take away from necklace. Sometimes you can find round pearls with a few cz’s around; but, not much. Leave a few dangly pieces in front of your ears just enough to let earrings peek thru and a few tiny wispy curls at the nape of your neck would look sexy. Do not know your skin tone, but as usual with make up, less is more, but lip color might need to be slightly darker if lights are lowered. As for shoes, black matte satin or another fabric design would look great. No patten leather or shiny. The height of the shoes is up to you, if you cannot walk in three/four inch heels, do not buy. Lower heels can be just as sexy, especially a sling back (with heels out). Also, start manicures and pedicures now especially if you are wearing sling backs or open toe shoes. For some zing would use red polish on toes. Fingernails, nude or light beige, red on nails would be too much. Colors do not have to match. Re: shoes, if they are new, be sure to scuff up the botton so you will not slide down. Walk on gravel or cement and scrub or take very thick grain sandpaper and scuff up the bottoms. Learned this the hard way. That’s accessories, hair, shoes, make-up. As for eye shadow colors use colors that accent your eyes, do not go with fads or try to match to dress, which you can’t since it is black. Would use some bronzer on cheeks. If you are fair skinned, a slight touch of bronzer around neck area, very light. Lipstick or gloss whichever you are most comfortable with. Do not try too many new things so you don’t want to have to worry about and you will be more comfortable if you don’t have to fool with too much stuff. Would carry a small, beaded or sequined evening clutch. Here is where you can go with flash. Possible silver or matte silver shoes and matching bag might work to break up all of the black. Should be very subdued if use silver. Pantyhose are out, to make legs look good leave legs and arms damp or slightly wet when you get out of the shower, use baby oil or vitamin e oil and massage into legs, not too much, the water will evaporate and this keeps oil from feeling too thick. Most important, experiment with hair, make-up before hand so that you will be on time and not have to make any last minute decisions. If you do not wear your hair up, can roll on hot rollers for a lots of curls, slight back comb,(old fashioned tease) and put on top of head with a solid black pony tail holder, back combing keeps hair from being too flattened to your head. Pull out ear and neck pieces with the end of a teasing comb or just slight edge of a comb. Can re-curl wispy’s if you want too, now girls wear them straight. There is another way to put up hair but cannot explain it here. If you can go to a good cosmetologist and let her do hair and make-up if you want to.Forgot hair up on top of head, back comb and wind into messy curls nothing too fixed, add as much height as you feel comfortable with. If go with silver accessories, can mix silver bangles with a couple of pearl bracelets. As many bangles as you feel comfortable with. Cuff bracelets are big now and a big silver or pearl one would be the finishing touch. Former cosmetologist/beauty consultant and Mother of four daughters. Good luck and have a great time. Be yourself. l
